Open contest launched for new Yorkshire pavilion

Yorkshire Forward, the region’s economic development agency, has launched a contest to design a new £650,000 mobile, Expo-like pavilion.

The demountable Renaissance Pavilion will be expected to tour the Yorkshire and Humber region showcasing the organisation’s ongoing regeneration programme, hosting various events, and housing a seated audience of up to 200.

Contest organisers RIBA Yorkshire and the RIBA Competitions Office hope the ‘open’ national contest will attract ‘inspiring, deliverable’ designs for a ‘flexible and unique event space’.

The winning scheme must be able to fit in a 40ft shipping container and be put up in less than five days.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Forward said: ‘The arrival of the pavilion [in an area] will be an event in itself.

‘It is intended to promote the best in contemporary architecture and innovation, and be stimulating and thought-provoking. By providing a distinct new-built presence, it will change a locality on an immediate basis and provide a sign towards future possibilities and positive change.’

The deadline for design submissions is 16 October 2008.
