ODPM acts on planning crisis

The ODPM has announced a raft of measures designed to ease the chronic backlog at the Planning Inspectorate.

The move follows a successful campaign by the Association of Consultant Architects (ACA), which has been lobbying hard for the government to introduce emergency measures.

Architects were horrified at the end of last year to find that the length of time that they had to wait for appeals had jumped to over a year.

The proposals - which largely follow a series of recommendations drawn up by the ACA - include extending the time allowed for appeals to be lodged from three months to six and a funding increase of £1 million.

A complete strategy is expected to be unveiled at a later date.
