McGonigle McGrath shows off Belfast terrace infill
[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + PROJECT DATA] Emerging Belfast-based practice McGonigle McGrath has revealed images of its recently completed ‘home from home’ for cancer charity Clic Sargent
The project provides accommodation for families of children being treated for cancer at the local hospital.
The new brick house fits into an existing terrace of houses and the façade features deep reveals which offer privacy and protection from the street.
The architect’s view
‘Homes from Home offer families free self-catering accommodation close to the main Regional Cancer Centres. If they are well enough, the child or young person can stay there too. The atmosphere is relaxed and non-clinical, friendly and welcoming.
‘Our design aspiration was to create a calm and peaceful domestic environment removed from both the harsh reality of the hospital and the liveliness of the busy street. We also sought to stitch a contemporary building into the existing fabric of an historic but degraded terrace. The new building does not mimic architectural devices of the existing terrace, but seeks to build a harmonious relationship by rigorous respect for its core character.
‘This particular location within the terrace offered surprisingly rural views of Divis Mountain from the rear upper floors, and we placed the main living and sleeping spaces to take advantage of a private courtyard and these long views, providing contrast and relief for the families using the Home from Home. The evening sun falling on the bedrooms and living room is filtered through the leafy branches of a screen of trees.
‘Openings in the masonry skin are deeply recessed to the front elevation offering protection from the street, and flush with the robust brick facades to the rear in response to the open views of the hills.’
