Massive global tsunami competition down to final five

An astonishing 379 entries from 43 countries have been whittled down to a shortlist of five in the international competition to design a tsunami memorial in Thailand.

The final five ( pictured above and below), who are anonymous, will now battle it out to win the contest to build one of the most significant memorials since the Second World War.

The competition received an extraordinary 679 expressions of interest from all around the world.

The five will now pick up a US$25,000 (£14,000) honorarium to work up a more detailed design that meets the brief's demand that the final scheme should be both 'appropriate' and 'interactive'.

The final designs of the five entries are due for submission on 2 May 2006. The selection process by the Stage II Jury is expected to be completed by 14 May and the winning design will be submitted to the Thai government on 22 May.
