Luxembourg tram competition picks two winners

UK practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands (LDS) has won joint first place in a competition to design a tramway for Luxembourg’s capital.

LuxTram, a partnership between the city of Luxembourg and the country’s Grand-Duchy, will make a final decision between LDS and the other winners, Metaform, Atelier 4D and Xavier Lust, in early March.

London-based LDS says its design is inspired by past tramlines in Luxembourg and adds to the city by re-organising public spaces and roads, and creating new street furniture: ‘As well as radically improving public transport in Luxembourg, this is a marvelous opportunity to return the boulevards along the central spine of the city to pedestrians and active street life,’ said partner Alex Lifschutz.

The practice now has three weeks to work up its final deigns.
