Liverpool Bluecoats transformation begins - images

Work has started on site to completely transform and save one of Liverpool's most famous historic buildings.

The project to transform the Bluecoats Arts Centre, by Dutch-based firm BIQ Architecten - working with Austin-Smith:Lord - started last week.

The duo plans to restore the fabric and facade of the Grade I-listed building, which was completed in 1724 to designs based on the work of Dutch religious architect Dom Hans Van der Laan.

In addition the project - which will extend the arts complex - involves creating a new wing for the building, which was granted planning permission because it will restore a Queen Anne H-plan lost during the Second World War.
