Life's a beach: Cathedral hosts Brighton day-out for £100m job

AHMM, ShedKM, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, John McAslan and Make on seaside outing today for £100m invited competition briefing

Cathedral Group’s creative director Martyn Evans is in Brighton today with AHMM, ShedKM, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, John McAslan and Make to brief the architects on the developer’s invited competition for the £100m redevelopment of an old municipal market in Circus St, just off Grand Parade, in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council and The University of Brighton.

The development will include residential, student accommodation, commercial, a new library for the university, retail, cafes and restaurants and a new home for South East Dance.

Representatives from the competing practices travelled to Brighton together this morning, where they met storytellers telling stories about Brighton on the train, then took a tour of the city in a vintage bus, finally lunching, and receiving a ‘picnic brief’ in the building in a specially constructed ‘set’.

The practices will then have one month to propose what Evans describes as ‘an award-winning, incredibly sustainable, Brighton-centric, piece of architectural genius.’
