Levitt Bernstein makes tight fit for UCL

Levitt Bernstein has won planning permission for this new hall of residence for University College, London.

The practice was commissioned to create more accommodation space at the James Lighthill House Annex.

The resulting scheme has seen the office squeeze 20 more residential units on to a site where, it claims, 'nobody thought it was possible'.

'The trick in this case is to build a new building in a narrow strip of land behind an existing student housing building,' a spokesman for the practice said.

'This creates a new landscaped quadrangle for the new and existing buildings, while still providing adequate natural light and privacy to each.'

It is expected that tenders will be invited in September.
