Architectural critic and historian Kenneth Frampton has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

British-born Frampton – currently the Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University in New York – is the third recipient of the award, following Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti in 2007 and Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in 2010.

The judges of the award praised Frampton’s ‘outstanding contribution to architectural theorization and critical reflection’.

Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa, one of the judges, said: ‘Frampton’s impact in the field of architecture exceeds that of most of the architects who have designed a lot of buildings, but not served as intellectual and ethical guides for several generations of architects and writers.’

Fellow judge William Menking, editor of the Architects Paper and Professor at the Graduate Center for Planning at the Pratt Institute in New York said: ‘Most international architecture awards only recognise individuals for their built contribution rather than their importance to the culture.’

Architecture culture is not just about buildings but the larger society

He added: ‘Giving Frampton this award makes a statement that architecture culture is not just about buildings but the larger society.’
