Jestico & Whiles to design Middlehaven's zero-carbon hotel

Jestico & Whiles has won the competition to design the flagship, zero-carbon hotel at the heart of the Alsop/Studio Egret West Middlehaven masterplan (pictured).

The 140-room scheme - the third in a series of building block-like 'cubes' sitting within the massive Middlesbrough regeneration area - will neighbour residential projects by Will Alsop and FAT (AJ 12.07.07).

Backed by Tees Valley Regeneration and developer BioRegional Quintain, the hotel is being hailed as an 'aspirational and groundbreaking' scheme, although detailed design work has only just started.

It is understood talks are already at 'an advanced stage' with a major hotel operator able to run the ambitious project in a sustainable way.

BioRegional Quintain managing director Pete Halsall said: 'The hotel will embody the sustainability principles which are at the heart of the Middlehaven masterplan and it will be a building of tremendous civic quality.'

A planning application is not expected to be submitted until early next year.
