JCB launches masterplan comp

One of the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturers, JCB, has launched a design competition to redevelop one of its sites.

The firm is searching for designers to redesign and masterplan its Heavy Products site in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, which is about to be relocated.

According to JCB chairman Anthony Bamford, the regeneration scheme will have to ‘contribute to the wider renaissance’ of the area and ‘meet the aspirations of the town and its residents’.

The project will deliver a a mix of residential and retail space, and a key part of the scheme will be the ‘incorporation’ of the existing Bamford Town Park.

Practices are invited to submit expressions of interest by 2pm on Wednesday 9 January 2008.

Up to six teams will be invited to produce some design work (3 A1 sheets each and concept model) and each team will receive an honorarium of £12,000 plus VAT for their submission.

For more information contact the RIBA Competitions Office or visit for a preliminary briefing paper.
