Introducing .MAP by GroundSure: a new mapping service for architects
Dan Montagnani, managing director of GroundSure, introduces .MAP, GroundSure’s mapping service tailored to architects’ needs
What is .MAP by GroundSure and why is it ahead of the rest of the field?
It’s a new mapping tool, allowing architects to quickly browse and buy maps and reports. Because we’re new, we have been able to develop a tool using the latest technology, so it is fit for a modern, dynamic architectural practice. We took the time to talk to architects before developing .MAP by GroundSure, tailoring our service to their needs to help overcome their frustrations with other mapping providers in the market.
Why did you link up with The Architects’ Journal?
The AJ is a respected voice for architects in Britain. We’re delighted that the publication recognises what we are trying to do with mapping. I hope with AJ’s insight and contacts we might be able to more quickly to evolve .MAP by GroundSure’s products and services to even better serve architects.
How is the use of maps and associated data changing?
Consumers expect companies to respond quickly to their needs, even sometimes before they know what they want. It’s no different with maps. Architects want to be able to browse and buy maps incredibly quickly so they can get on with more important project work. And they want to do it in CAD or on their preferred browser. With some providers you are still limited to which browser you can use. Many architects are Mac users, but couldn’t use Safari to browse and buy maps. You can with .MAP by GroundSure. We have also recently launched tools such as online chat and screen sharing, so we can quickly help people when they are browsing. This is part of the My .MAP initiative, which offers regular contact with customers to develop new features that they tell us they need.
What are the benefits for architects in using it?
It’s quick and easy to use on any web browser. We also have a plug-in for AutoCAD, so the map buying process can be done without having to leave CAD. As GroundSure is a leading provider of environmental intelligence, we are also uniquely able to give architects free flags of environmental risks and planning precedent information when they first browse a site. Flood risks and ground stability issues are on the rise, so it’s very important that architects understand and allow for all the potential risks to a site before they start to design. As well as offering free flags of these risks as well as planning precedents, we also give architects the ability to browse and quickly order more detailed reports.
What problems can arise with outdated map data?
Using outdated data you could make the wrong decisions, which might cause delays, increase costs and lead to legal battles. Using unlicensed mapping might also invalidate indemnity insurance, so architects could put both their reputations and business at risk.
How does the cost compare with other sources of maps?
We’re comparable. Where we excel is in added value, via services like the free environmental risk and planning precedent flags as well as free map view credits. We are also quicker to use, giving architect’s more time to focus on design.
