International practices fight it out in anonymous Newport comp - images

These are the first snapshots of the shortlisted schemes vying to win the Newport Market Square Open Ideas competition.

The seven anonymous finalists were picked from 53 submissions received from around the globe, including entries from as far afield as the Far East, America and South Africa.

Contestants were asked to come up with designs for a 'dynamic, inspirational space' to connect the Welsh city's commercial core with the River Usk.

Promoted by the city council, Newport Unlimited, the Welsh Development Agency and the Design Commission for Wales, the competition will be judged early next month, with prizes available for first, second and third place entries.

An exhibition of the shortlisted finalists is currently on display in Newport City Centre Library.
