Ian Shaw completes beton concrete swimming pool

[FIRST LOOK + DRAWINGS + DATA] Frankfurt-based Ian Shaw Architekten has completed this in-situ cast outdoor swimming pool

The €105,000 pool is an addition to a house in Darmstadt, Germany.

Described as ‘simple but complex’, the project used a steel frame to encase the shuttering for the concrete during construction, resulting in a smooth surface finish with no evidence of shuttering joints or anchor points.

Manchester-born, practice founder Shaw said the scheme had taken its ‘dimensions from the classical golden section’.

Stone slabs have been used along the pool’s edge to both reduce the risk of slipping whilst contrasting with the white plaster of the pool walls.

The University of Liverpool educated architect added: ‘The scheme’s subtle, integrated lighting animates the design, disseminating an aesthetic borne out of structural rigour, timeless geometric proportions and exacting materiality.

‘The architecture has been distilled, reduced to an elemental state, enabling us to experience what is most real: its spatial tectonic singularity.’
