Hopkins gains planning for £24m Alder Hey Scheme

Hopkins has been granted planning approval for a new Research and Education Building at Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool

The practice won the £24million commission in Autumn 2013, coming top of an undisclosed shortlist.

The three-storey facility for children and young people is corridor-free and features a ‘curvilinear central atrium… formed by a series of open yet intimate spaces and contains voids, bridges, meeting and write-up spaces and garden terraces.’

Two ‘modular side wings’ will contain research and teaching laboratories, offices, meeting rooms, lecture theatres, breakout spaces and a café and library.

Designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent, the building, which will be adjacent to BDP’s new Alder Hey Hospital, will be constructed in two separate phases, one of 3,660m2 and the other of 3,293m2.

Construction is anticipated to begin in June with completion intended a year later.
