HLM designs a Barking tower

HLM Architects has designed this 27-storey building near Barking station, East London.

Backed by Swan Housing, the tower will house commercial, private and affordable accommodation, and will have elevated glazed garden spaces for residents.

According to the architects, a tower of this scale and size has long been expected for the site which is one of the prime redevelopment sites in Barking's centre.

Previously plans for the site drawn up in 2006 showed an early glimpse of what was on the drawing board in the form of a 27-storey building by Lovell Sims.

HLM came up with this revised version, which it says is 'made distinctive by vertical slab elements that zig-zag against each other creating a striking profile from their outlines'.
