Heatherwick Studio's distillery on track for BREEAM Outstanding

Heatherwick Studio has achieved design stage BREEAM Outstanding for distillery retrofit

The Haverstoke Mill gin distillery in Hampshire for Bombay Sapphire has achieved a BREEAM outstanding rating at design stage, becoming the first retrofit project to achieve the sustainability accolade.

Heatherwick Studio’s distillery development includes the refurbishment of Grade II listed Victorian Mill buildings. For 200 years the site produced paper for British bank notes. It is now being renovated from a derelict mill into a state-of-the-art premium gin distillery and visitor centre.

When completed the distillery will see an 85 per cent improvement over the carbon emissions specified in the building regulations.

Martin Townsend, director of BREEAM at BRE Global said: This is one of the highest scores under BREEAM and a first in the drinks industry. It is particularly impressive given this is a conversion of an existing building.’

The building is set to complete in autumn 2013.
