Heatherwick named for Yorkshire Maggie’s Centre

Thomas Heatherwick is to design a new cancer care centre for Maggie’s in the grounds of St James’s University Hospital in Leeds

The Maggie’s Yorkshire Centre will be built next to the hospital’s £220million Bexley Wing, among a number of multi-storey buildings, and is expected to open in 2016.

The announcement adds Heatherwick Studio to the A-list of architects to design centres for the chartiy - including Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, and Zaha Hadid.

Maggie’s chief executive Laura Lee said the demands of the location meant Heatherwick’s design would require ‘a high degree of ingenuity to create the calm, uplifting environment’ that is the charity’s trademark.

‘Great architecture is vital to the care that Maggie’s offers and the studio is renowned for its inventive approach to design and its ability to truly get the best out of a space,’ she said.

‘This will be our first centre in Yorkshire and we look forward to providing the vital help and support needed to people living with cancer in the region.’

Studio founder Thomas Heatherwick said the practice was ‘honoured’ to working on the new centre.

‘Our role is to make a special place that will support and encourage people affected by cancer and inspire the staff that work with them,’ he said.

Earlier this month, the City of London Corporation granted planning permission for a controversial Steven Holl-designed Maggie’s Centre at St Barts Hospital after an earlier version of the proposals was revised.

Meanwhile the AJ understands Heatherwick and Danish starchitect Bjarke Ingels have been appointed by Google to work on a top-secret project for the tech giant in the USA. Details of the commission remain under wraps, but it is understood Ingels’ practice BIG is leading on the scheme.
