Hawkins\Brown wins £50m Newcastle uni job

Hawkins\Brown has seen off Hassell, Make Architects and Ryder Architecture to win a £50 million RIBA Competition to design a new science facility for Newcastle University

The 10,000m² ‘living lab’ will be the first independent Newcastle University building to be built on the 24 acre Science Central development on the city’s former Scottish & Newcastle Brewery site.

The competition called for a ‘distinct and recognisable building’ to ‘underpin the University’s core theme of digitally enabled urban sustainability environments’.

The building will include flexible space for start-up businesses, a public workshop, demonstration spaces, a ‘digital’ library and a café.

The scheme is a collaboration between the University and Newcastle City Council and is expected to open at the beginning of the academic year in September 2017.
