Hamiltons Architects to design new facilities for Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

Hamiltons Architects has been appointed by the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD), Cardiff, to design new performance, rehearsal and teaching facilities.

The plans for RWCMD, which is at the edge of Bute Park beside Cardiff Castle, include a new 350-seat concert hall and two theatres - one of which is a 'flexible black box performance space' - plus rehearsal rooms, theatre design studios and teaching facilities.

Originally 34 practices entered the design competition, and Hamiltons was selected from a shortlist of 11 to take on the scheme, the cost of which is yet to be determined.

Chairman of RWCMD Christopher Nott said: 'It is essential for Wales' cultural, educational and social development that it has a vibrant and successful National Conservatoire that can more than match its competitors in the UK.'

The project, which is the result of a strategic alliance between the college and the University of Glamorgan, is due for handover in autumn 2010.
