Hakes bags double competition win in Colchester

Hakes Associates has won two design competitions for a footbridge and department store exterior

Hakes Associates has won two design competitions for a footbridge and department store exterior within the proposed £250 million Vineyard Gate development in Colchester, Essex

The practice – one of AJ's 40 Under 40 – saw off Chapman Taylor, Studio Egret West and Hawkins/Brown to win the scheme to design a facade for the new shopping centre (above), part of a wider masterplan for the town by local practice Stanley Bragg Architects.

The curved facade – dubbed 'Flint' – wraps round a series of atria that lead up to a roof garden which looks out on to Colchester. The facade will be made up of large-format ceramic tiles.

The site of the shopping centre is diagonally opposite Rafael Viñoly's soon-to-be-completed 'Firstsite' contemporary arts centre.
