Hakes Associates makes it into final four in Kent bridges comp

Promising London-based practice Hakes Associates - one of the hot prospects featured in the AJ's 40 Under 40 - has been shortlisted for a bridge competition in Kent.

Spence Associates, Birds Portchmouth Russum and WAM Architects have also made it through to the second round of the contest to design two 'landmark' footbridges in Rochester.

Competition sponsor Design Excellence in North Kent and regeneration agency Medway Renaissance Partnership will now ask the four practices to develop their ideas further.

Each practice will receive an honorarium of £4,000 on submission of their final entries for the bridges - seen as key to the Rochester Riverside development on the River Medway.

The winning team will be chosen by a panel of judges, which includes staff at the Kent Architecture Centre, at an awards ceremony on 1 March in the RIBA's headquarters in Portland Place, central London.
