Groves Natcheva reveals South London apartments
[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + DATA] Groves Natcheva Architects has completed this £1.25 million housing scheme in Tulse Hill, South London
The three-storey 1,066m² glazed brick-clad scheme contains nine flats above a ground floor commercial unit.
The apartments vary in size and layout with each having access to outdoor space.
Courtyards allow light into the ground floor units, with the main living space and master bedroom overlooking internal winter gardens, ‘well screened’ from the mews and railway line. Units on the third floor have access to a row of balcony terraces, with a central communal outdoor space.
The architect’s view
The new building is set alongside Tulse Hill Railway Station, with the business unit fronting onto the station forecourt and the apartments accessed via Station Mews. A bold reassertion of the pattern and scale of the Victorian-era streetscape surrounding the station (opened in 1868), the new development overlooks the forecourt, with ground floor level floor to ceiling windows bringing natural light into the commercial unit, which is set below the level of the adjoining railway embankment.
A façade composed of glazed black and white bricks sets up a strong rhythm along Station Mews. The large square windows of the residential units are clearly divided into three storey-high divisions, each framed in white to mimic the domestic scale of the traditional London terrace, while also referencing the character of small scale industrial architecture.
In addition to the glazed engineering brick facades, the building makes extensive use of large single pane glass windows and rectangular, industrial scale glazing. This gives the apartments a strong loft-style character from inside, with generous amounts of light and views that acknowledge and celebrate the proximity of the railway station and platforms, rather than try and shield them.
