Groves Natcheva reveals pair of timber-clad apartment buildings

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + PROJECT DATA] Emerging practice Groves Natcheva has completed this £950,000 apartment scheme in South London

The 610m2 scheme in Lewisham features nine units: a pair of four-storey, timber-framed blocks housing two maisonettes at the front of the scheme; and five homes laid out in a single-storey mews-like arrangement at the rear.

The mews has a central access courtyard and green sedum roofs which, according to the architect, ‘preserve the views across the site and from the maisonettes at the front’.

The architect’s view

‘Detailing is of critical importance. The careful craftsmanship and high tolerances in the timber façade construction have allowed the simple cladding detail, with its carefully resolved proportions, to shine through.

‘The vertical emphasis of the apartment building façades, accentuated by the tightly controlled fenestration and the rhythm of the wooden cladding, reasserts the human scale of the structures and ties them in to the language of the surrounding buildings. Each upper storey is also given a subtle 50mm overhang, referencing the classical device of the belvedere. The broader windows, set back balconies and a slower vertical rhythm differentiate the upper level, implying the sweeping views available from the living spaces and allow the apartment towers to be read as a structured, balanced composition with a strong vertical hierarchy.
