Grimshaw expands Doha office

Grimshaw is to recruit architects in London to staff its new office in Doha

The practice, which also has studios in New York, Sydney and Melbourne, has set up in the Qatar capital as it seeks to win more work in the country.

Deputy chairman Andrew Whalley told AJ the practice would be looking for staff from the UK and US as well as locally.

‘Juan Porral, who set up our New York office, has relocated to Doha and we are starting to work out of Qatar,’ he said.

‘The office will evolve in terms of headcount but we will be recruiting locally and in New York and London.

‘People may also be based in those offices, or in Melbourne or Sydney, and working on Qatar schemes.’

Grimshaw is working on a number of projects in Qatar including a suite of buildings at New Doha International Airport.

Whalley said the practice would continue to pursue work in the country, which will host the 2018 World Cup and has huge development plans to 2030.

‘We see lots of opportunities in Qatar, the country has been fortunate with its resources particularly in natural gas. But we are not seeking volume, we would rather do a few things and do them well.’

Grimshaw will also target work across the Middle East from its new Doha base.

‘We are already looking at a couple of things in Abu Dhabi and will look at the wider region,’ said Whalley.

He added that Qatar appealed to the practice ‘culturally and ethically’.
