Green Deal cash back scheme opens

In the run up to the official launch of the Green Deal later this month, DECC has opened up a £125million cash back scheme

Announcing the scheme, energy secretary Edward Davey said: ‘Energy saving has never been so attractive’.

The cash back scheme was initially announced in October as an incentive to boost consumer sign up for the Green Deal and encourage faith in the scheme.

Householders who choose to use the Green Deal to make improvements such as loft insulation, solid wall insulation and new heating systems will qualify for the cash back scheme which offers up to £1,000. To qualify households will need to book a Green Deal property assessment so they are then ready to have improvements installed under the Green Deal when it comes on board on the 28 January.

There has previously been upset among the industry, that the government wasn’t doing enough to promote the scheme ahead of its launch, but Neil Schofield, of  Worcester Bosch said: ‘This is a clear signal that the Green Deal is building momentum and I’m delighted there is such a strong incentives scheme in place to encourage early take up. We’re excited about how this could open up the energy efficiency market.’

Last week, the government announced measures to relax planning rules for solid wall insulation in order to spur on Green Deal uptake.
