Gareth Hoskins Architects' Shetland scheme wins cash

Gareth Hoskins Architects’ new cinema and music venue in Lerwick, Shetland, has received £2.12 million from the Scottish Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund.

The Shetland Islands Council has also earmarked a further £5 million towards the cost of the £9.3 million building, known as The Mareel (pictured).

The cash injection means that the waterfront project can finally be started, some two years after the practice won a competition to design the venue.

Adjacent to Shetland’s historic Hays Dock, The Mareel will house a 320-seat auditorium, a 160-seat main cinema and a 40-seat second screen, a cafe bar, a recording studio and rehearsal rooms.

The project is due to start on site this August with construction scheduled to complete in February 2010.
