Fraser Brown Mackenna unwraps cor-ten clad classrooms

Fraser Brown Mackenna has completed this £1.2 million classroom block at Carshalton Boys Sports College, in South London

The new 775m2 building houses eight new classrooms and staff offices.

The scheme used a standardised 1,200m grid and modular components, allowing it to be built quickly.

Clad in cor-ten, the perforated skin protects the south-east façade from solar gains. It also provides a ‘secondary safety function’, protecting the building from the adjoining playground and basketball courts.

The architect’s view

The interiors are flooded with natural light and make use of moveable partitions to allow for flexible and generous teaching spaces. Full-height internal windows looking onto the corridor improve lighting conditions and aid surveillance. Indications post-completion have shown the transparency of the space has already had a positive impact, improving student attentiveness and behaviour within a more mature working environment.

Planning win for Fraser Brown MacKenna cor-ten clad classrooms

Fraser Brown MacKenna has been granted planning permission for a new classroom block at Carshalton Boys Sports College, in London

The £1.25 million, single-storey scheme will replace an existing temporary building by providing eight new classrooms, alongside staff facilities.

The new building will be clad in mesh, with a combination of solid and perforated cor-ten steel and aluminium panels.

The cor-ten panels are perforated to protect the south east façade from excessive solar gains. It also provides a secondary safety function, protecting the building from the adjoining playground and basketball courts.
