Foster and Neil Tomlinson to revamp New Covent Garden Market

Foster + Partners and London-based Neil Tomlinson Architects have been appointed by Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) to revamp New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) in central London.

The two practices have been selected as part of a design team charged with modernising the market’s 30-year-old infrastructure, and plans are expected to be submitted in the summer.

The appointment follows a competition launched last November (AJ online 13.11.07) to find ‘a highly qualified, multidisciplinary firm’ to draw up plans to redevelop the site and create an ‘economically sustainable market’.

The team, led by consultant URS, has been appointed on a three-stage commission, and contracts will be reviewed after each stage.

Brenda Dean, chairman of CGMA said: ‘We expect that the brief drawn up will to look at some of the NCGM site opportunities which will allow us to deliver a modern and efficient market for the future.’
