Flood of ideas
It was encouraging that someone from Thames Gateway Development Corporation was in the audience at Open House' GreenSky event at Fulcrum on Wednesday.
Barker presented ongoing research for DEFRA - the team includes BRE, Cyril Sweett, Halcrow for hydrology, Fulcrum for sustainability, and LDA Design - into how communities can be designed to accommodate flooding. It starts with the obvious: studying the site and locating multi-use outdoor space in areas that can take flooding, and siting buildings so that access can be provided to at least one side during high water. Baca is also looking at principles of 'amphibious construction' and how to make a 'wetproof' house.
It makes a lot of sense. Let's hope the right people listen.
