Flanagan Lawrence Cornish holiday homes scheme set to start on site

First phase of wider £50 million waterfront development provides 12 two, three and four-bedroom detached villas in neglected valley

Work is set to start on site on this holiday home scheme designed by Flanagan Lawrence in the Millendreath valley, close to Looe harbour in south-east Cornwall.

The practice, formerly known as BFLS and before that Hamiltons, began working on the masterplan for the mixed-used regeneration of the ‘neglected’ 35ha valley back in 2008. The firm won outline planning two years later. A dozen two-storey hillside villas and supporting infrastructure will be built in the first phase, starting in September, with a detailed application for a further 38 homes expected in the autumn. The homes will be ‘integrated into the landscape and hanging gardens covering the steep valley sides’ and are described as ‘inverted’, with the living spaces in open-sided boxes arranged above bedrooms housed within stone plinths. The site is exposed to prevailing south-westerly winds, therefore the development has been kept to the lower part of the slope.

A mix of two, three and four-bedroom detached villas, the homes’ upper floors will be built from a light steel structure clad in timber, framed by a white rendered plane. The ‘denser’ lower portions are faced with a local Cornish stone.

Backed by the Espalier Group, the wider, £50 million project includes a spa, shops, permanent homes and 15 waterfront villas designed by Charles Mador Architects.
