Sheppard Robson finishes Strathclyde uni refurb

[FIRST LOOK + DATA] Sheppard Robson has unveiled its £14.3 million overhaul of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow

Completed as part of the university’s £350 million development plan, the refurbishment is the practice’s second project on the university’s Glasgow city campus - in 2010 Sheppard Robson opened the doors to its £35 million Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences building.

The Lord Hope and Curran buildings have been remodelled by the architect to house the newly formed Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences.

The buildings contain open plan work spaces arranged around the perimeter of the building with meeting rooms, breakout hubs, touchdown areas and welfare in the centre of the floor plans.

A new public courtyard that has been created between the two buildings anticipates a sports centre to the south-west that will also be completed as part of the development plan.

Architect’s view

James Dick, partner, Sheppard Robson

This project has delivered high specification office, learning and teaching accommodation, supplemented by attendant support and specialist teaching facilities.

Office and teaching spaces have been designed in line with the university’s space planning policy. Having analysed the way the occupants of the buildings work on a daily basis, we have remodelled the buildings to provide a flexibly divided floor plate that can accommodate future change that is more spatially efficient.
