Rogers completes £97m Sydney skyscraper

Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners’ (RSH+P) first project in Australia, a 34-storey office block in downtown Sydney, has opened its doors

The 8 Chifley Square office development, which features RSH+P’s distinctive red bracing was designed in collaboration with Australian practice Lippmann Partnership.

A public space has been created in the six-storey void beneath the main tower - a covered area similar to that proposed at the practice’s‘Cheesegrater’ skyscraper, currently under construction in the City of London.

The office space is arranged in two stacked modules of 12 and nine floors, each made up of three-storey ‘villages’. The two masses are split by a ‘village square’ on the 18th floor. This communal area, set within a three-storey void, will act meeting space.

Described by the architects as one of the ‘greenest buildings in Sydney’ the skyscraper has achieved a 6 Star Green Star Office Design v2 certified rating.

Progess is also continuing on RSH+P’s masterplan for the nearby disused contained port at Barangaroo, that includes three towers designed by the practice, the first of which is due to complete in 2016.

Architect’s view

Ivan Harbour, partner, RSH+P

‘8 Chifley is a unique building for 21st century Sydney. Its emphasis on community, both indoors and out, from ground to roof, celebrates Australia’s passion for a balanced quality of life and the great outdoors. The building finally forms a focus to Chifley Square, drawing the public plaza up to its front door and forming a great loggia for all Sydneysiders to enjoy.’
