The 6,200 m² scheme on the Heath Park Campus at the University Hospital of Wales contains a library, along with clinical skills and simulation laboratories, postgraduate teaching rooms and the Dean of Medicine’s offices.

The teaching spaces in the seven storey building are arranged around two full height atria that provide natural ventilation and helped the building to achieved a rating of BREEAM ‘Excellent’.

The Medical School sits opposite the Ty Dewi Sant Lecture Theatre, also designed by Powell Dobson, to create a new plaza on the campus.

Architect’s view

‘We are delighted to have worked with Cardiff University, the School of Medicine and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to deliver this exciting new learning facility. The low energy building uses a central atrium and natural ventilation to produce a light, airy and stimulating environment, together with informal learning and library spaces that will allow undergraduates to collaborate and develop using modern teaching and learning techniques.’
