Platform 5 unveils St Martin-in-the-Fields café pavilion

Platform 5 Architects has completed a temporary outdoor café in the east courtyard of St Martin’s, central London

The 2013 AJ Small Projects shortlisted-practice built the small self-contained kiosk, clad in peened stainless steel, in a courtyard between Trafalgar Square and the Strand.

Prefabricated in Italy, the pop-up café will be open throughout the summer before being removed from the site and placed in storage for the winter.

Lightweight tables and chairs can be stored within the unit, which is secured with stainless steel roller shutters, when the café is not in operation.

Architect’s view

Peter Allen, partner at Platform 5 Architects

‘We are delighted at the success of The Café in the Courtyard. As we had hoped, it is a stylish little building that has brought a fresh identity and new activity to an otherwise underused pocket of London, and valuable additional income to St Martin-in-the-Fields.

‘While producing something temporary yet stylish for such as sensitive site was a challenge, we believe our response offers solutions for similar organisations and sites.’
