Neil Mathews wins planning for coastal home

Neil Mathews Architects has gained planning permision for this modern house in Northern Ireland

The Belfast-based practice has designed this four-bedroom home for a coastal site on the Antrim coast.

Angled out towards the sea, the living accomodation steps down the hillside from the kitchen, with a few steps down to the dining room and a few steps more to the lounge.

Construction on the house is scheduled to start on site later this year.

Architect’s view

Neil Mathews, founder, Neil Mathews Architects

‘There is a feeling of calm evoked by a long distance view. From eighty metres above the sea and framed by three hundred miles of horizon, our clients are pleased with their break from the confines of a vertical city.

‘Conscious of the view and listening to friend’s enjoyment of a nearby home saying ‘there’s a window every time you need one’, we have paid heed to both sentiments in designing the North Coast House.

‘During both winter and summer here there is not much shadow from the sun so the direct north-south orientation of the bedroom wing wakes with you in the morning and warms the rooms in the evening.’
