Mace unwraps shiny new £5 million community centre

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + DATA] Mace’s Roundwood Centre in Harlesden, London, officially opened earlier this month

The 1,400m² youth centre, which has been built with £5 million of Big Lottery ‘myplace’ funding, was designed by Mace in association with the Cambridge-based Saunders Boston, the original concept and planning designers.

The building is constructed from a series of offset elements wrapped in solid shells that are linked with translucent inserts to allow natural light into the centre and create the appearance that the wrapped element is ‘floating freely’.

The community centre contains a media suite, performance area, outdoor multi-use games area, an IT suite, dance studio, art room and a café, as well as flexible spaces for young people to use for meetings and clubs.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ the building incorporates grey water recycling, solar energy generation and natural ventilation.

Councillor Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent, said: “[The] Roundwood Centre is a fantastic, modern building that will make a huge difference to young people in the Harlesden and surrounding areas, providing a safe place for hundreds of them to learn, train and enjoy themselves.
