Keppie completes Northern Irish children's support unit

Keppie Design has completed this Intensive Support Unit for vulnerable children in Ballymena, Northern Ireland

The £1.2million centre will provide residential care for up to six children who have ‘been identified as having complex and challenging needs’.

Designed for the Northern Health and Social Care Trust the unit has six ‘robust’ en-suite bedrooms that incorporate built in furniture and anti-barricade doors.

‘To encourage the children to take part in every day household tasks’ the bedrooms are arranged around a communal living area with a kitchen and dining room that overlooks a secure garden. The building also has meeting rooms for contact with family members and carers.

Architect’s view

Martin Wylie, associate architect, Keppie Design

The main requirement was to provide the children with not only a safe and secure environment but also a comfortable one. We designed a modern domestic style facility with natural light introduced through full height glazing and extensive roof lights where possible.
