Hadid makes South Korean debut with new cultural hub

Zaha Hadid Architects has completed a £272million cultural hub in Seoul, South Korea

Built in one of the busiest and most historic districts of the city, the 62,957m² Dongdaemun Design Plaza has four storeys above ground and three basement levels and replaces a baseball stadium and flea market.

Designed for the Seoul Design Foundation, the city-run operator of the hub, the building contains two exhibition halls, two convention halls, a design museum, design lab, education centre and conference halls.

The building stands alongside a 30,000m² park that incorporates a restored castle wall and provides a ‘green oasis within the busy urban surroundings of Dongdaemun’.

It is understood around 300,000 people visited the building during its opening weekend (22/23 March).
