Guy Hollaway reveals proposal for Margate seafront hotel

Guy Hollaway Architects has designed a 60-bed hotel for the Rendezvous site next to Turner Contemporary in Margate

Designed for Kent County Council, the Hythe-based architects propose to build a 60-bed ‘destination’ hotel and restaurant on the seafront between David Chipperfield’s waterfront gallery and the Margate Winter Gardens.

The two lower floors of the scheme contains 18 maisonettes, ‘cut into the landscape’. Described by the architect as ’21st century beach huts’, the facades of these serviced appartments contain double-height glazing with multicoloured storm shutters.

Above the flats, there is a restaurant with panoramic views over the harbour and conference facilities, which is topped with four floors of bedrooms.

Guy Hollaway Architects is also continuing work on another major Margate landmark, Dreamland. Phase one of the project, drawn up with Hemingway Design, is planned to open in spring 2015.

Architect’s view

Guy Hollaway, partner, Guy Hollaway Architects

‘The unique site, and it’s proximity to the Turner Contemporary, creates the opportunity for a destination hotel with no bad rooms; every room will have a sea view. The hotel and restaurant will compliment the gallery and contribute to the regeneration of Margate.’
