Flanagan Lawrence unwraps 'pinstriped' Hammersmith office

Flanagan Lawrence has completed this nine-storey office block in Hammersmith, London

The building contains 10,200m² of office space within a triple glazed skin, with restaurants, cafés and a reception area that can be used as a gallery space on the ground floor.

Two layers of high performance coatings on the fully-glazed facade, along with a ‘pinstriped’ frit pattern that covers 40 per cent of the glass surface, aims to minimise solar gain and improve thermal performance. This, along with solar panels and a green roof, has enabled the building to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’.

Designed for Development Securities and Scottish Widows Investment Partnership Property Trust the building is the first of two offices that are being built on the site of a former NCP car park in Hammersmith.

Architect’s view

David Lawrence, director, Flanagan Lawrence:
‘Our approach to the design of this building has been one that acknowledges the fact that there is no single coherent architectural language in Hammersmith. The public realm and the relationship with surrounding buildings have been strong influences on the plan form, and the massing responds to the differing scales of the neighbourhood with the glass planes being placed in differing orientations depending on the setting of neighbouring buildings.

‘The sleek triple glazed glass skin with its pin stripped pattern changes appearance at different times of the day and year depending on the light conditions, reflecting buildings, landscape, sky and people and has helped us to deliver a very dynamic and sustainable building.’
