BDP unwraps Old Trafford cricket ground pavilion revamp

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] The final phase of BDP’s £32m redevelopment of Lancashire County Cricket Club’s has been completed in time for this year’s Ashes

The overhaul of the 1895 pavilion, completed ahead of this summer’s test series against Australia, removed a number of post-war additions and ‘sensitively intertwines a new steel-framed red brick and glass extension with the original red brick and sandstone façade’.

The pavilion provides updated facilities for members, as well as hospitality, events and executive spaces, and new club offices.

Gavin Elliott, chairman of BDP’s Manchester studio, said: ‘The pavilion is the emotional heart of the cricket club, and throughout the design process we have worked with the club to ensure we strike a balance between creating a state-of-the-art sporting venue that respects the emotional attachment many have for the ‘old’ pavilion. The pavilion has been restored to its rightful place as the physical and symbolic centrepiece of the new ground.’

BDP developed a masterplan to redevelop the facilities at the international cricket ground in 2008. The practice has previously completed a player and media centre and the Point, a 1,000 seat conference and events centre, at the ground.
