Batterham Matthews Design unwraps oak-framed rural home

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Batterham Matthews Design’s timber framed house, in Gloucestershire, was shortlisted for a RIBA Regional Award last month

The £850,000 home has a curved plan that follows the line of a new ‘dewdrop shaped’ lake in a sloping area of woodland on the outskirts of Cranham in Gloucestershire.

Sat behind a Cotswold stone wall the green oak-framed house supports a mono pitched sedum roof that overhangs the front facade.

Built for a couple in their early 60s the main reception rooms and master bedroom suite are on the ground floor with three guest bedrooms placed on the lower floor below. A section of the floor within the two store areas is timber and removable so that in the future a lift can be incorporated in the building.

The house, which incorporates an open bore ground source heat pump (GSHP) that feeds into the lake via a heat exchanger, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels and high levels of Rockwool insulation, has achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5.
