Avanti completes Mile End special needs school

Avanti Architects’ £8 million school for pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties near Mile End has officially opened

Located within the site of a former Victorian workhouse the three-storey school is designed to provide learning and specialist therapeutic facilities, that include hydrotherapy and specialist sensory rooms, for up to 80 secondary level students.

At the centre of the building a double-height social hub with access to an outdoor play area allows the building to be understandable on arrival.

Highly passive fabric efficiency and air tightness along with a CHP plant that delivers heat to the pool, solar panels and air source heat pumps has allowed the building to achieve a rating of BREEAM Excellent.
