First look: New Teeside wildlife centre

  • Comment

The AJ can reveal an exclusive image of the £2.1 million visitor centre at the Saltholme wildlife reserve in Teesside

The centre, designed by Newcastle-based architect JDDK, fuses traditional materials with modern design and features a swingbridge to protect the entrance at night.

The RSPB’s £4.5m-nature reserve, created on an old industrial site, opened in January. Managers expect the 1,000 acre park is expected to attract 100,000 visitors a year.

The 6m swingbridge is built from turntables usually used by the army to turn tanks for maintenance.
