First look at Chipperfield's Chinese village

David Chipperfield has released these images of his recently competed Ninetree Village scheme in the Qiang Tang River valley, near Hangzhou, China.

The 23,500m2 luxury development has been set in a 'chessboard pattern' and is bordered by a dense bamboo forest.

Each of the 12 apartment buildings, for developer Joyon Real Estate Investments, houses five 'generously proportioned' 450m2 flats.

A loggia zone runs around all of the blocks, 'providing a transition area between the interior living space and the surrounding nature' and designed to mirror the exterior wooden skin of traditional Chinese housing.

At the northern end of the site is a 'walled' outdoor swimming pool and a clubhouse made from coloured concrete and Chinese volcanic stone.
