First image revealed of new bridge for Castleford

McDowell and Benedetti has revealed the first image of its new footbridge over the River Aire - hailed as 'the most spectacular' scheme in Channel 4's urban makeover series the Castleford Project.

The S-shaped 130m bridge will follow the contours of a weir and is set to create a link between Castleford town centre and a local island.

The project, which is being funded by Yorkshire Forward, English Partnerships and Wakefield council, is expected to cost nearly £5 million and will start on site next summer subject to planning permission.

Wakefield council leader and Castleford Project Steering Group member Peter box said: 'This is a really exciting proposal which promises to revitalise Castleford's riverside area, improving the quality of life for local people and attracting new visitors to the town.

The completed bridge is expected to be unveiled in mid-2007.
