Finalists unveiled for RIBA Redcar contest

The AJ can exclusively reveal the five shortlisted designs in the contest to develop the seafront at Redcar in north-east England

Local firm DKS Architects (picture 4, below) is battling against FL&S landskap/arkitektur (1), Smeeden Foreman with Seven Architecture (2), Studio 8 Architects (3) and WAP Architects (5) in the RIBA-organised competition.

The finalists were picked from more than 50 entrants, including submissions from Ireland, Iran, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The design teams were asked by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and the Environment Agency ‘to generate ideas for the public realm on the landward side of the proposed new sea wall, together with a coherent set of proposals for the seafront’s backdrop zone’.

A winner is expected to be announced in early February 2009.
