Downturn forces Gehry to relax - and fire half his workers

Rogers lays off 20 per cent. Foster lays off 25 per cent. Gehry lays off 50 per cent. That’s a starchitect for you, doing things bigger than anyone else

Speaking to the Telegraph Gehry admitted things were tough – in fact he confessed the practice had half as much work as last year. The Los Angeles-based architect, who became an octogenarian last weekend, said: ‘I promised a lot of people I’d slow down when I turned 80. I wasn’t really planning to do it, but because of the economy, I wound up keeping that promise by accident.’

So a fibber too.
