The RIBA's competition office has unveiled a new international competition to design an observatory at the mouth of the River Mersey

The RIBA's competition office has unveiled a new international competition to design an observatory at the mouth of the River Mersey.

Architects are asked to come up with proposals for an 'exciting new landmark structure and visitor facility' for the site – currently home to the long-abandoned Crosby Radar Tower.

With 360° views of the docks, the Wirral, a nearby windfarm and Anthony Gormley's 'Another Place' exhibition on the beach, Sefton Council is hailing the project as a key potential tourist magnet.

According to the brief, 'this project provides a unique opportunity to create an international signature structure for the Liverpool City Region and a facility which showcases the importance of the River Mersey and its environs'.

Six firms will eventually be shortlisted – each receiving a £6,000 honorarium.
